Both Jefferson and Reskin are shown to have some good qualities, and, more importantly, neither of them is likely to kill or physically harm anybody, much less endanger mankind, as was de rigeur for the old-time mad scientists. The city's crowds make up a multilingual mass exhibiting a dazzling plurality of ethnic or subcultural dress codes. Nobody knew that I had discovered this window into all kinds of alien ways of thinking that wouldn’t have been at all acceptable to the people who ran that little world I lived in.

The story is set in the type of police state needed to ensure that only one company is allowed to make robots, and only one type of robot is allowed. I wouldn't consider apocalyptic or post-apocalyptic fiction a subgenre of cyberpunk. It’s just as easy to walk down a street in an alternate cyberspace as it is to walk down the actual physical street, and society has usually taken a sharp turn for the worse (Hafner and Markoff, 9). The Rediscovery of Man (1993), by Cordwainer Smith (1913-1966).

As a spinoff of cyberpunk, timepunk is more outrageous. In the game you use high tech weaponry and cybernetic modified items. Cyberpunk fared less well on television, with Max Headroom (1987–88) being the only notable example. From the weasely Mark Zuckerberg of The Social Network to the sociopathic Julian Assange-like Andreas Wolf of Jonathan Franzen’s novel Purity and the social-network fascist lemmings of David Eggers’s novel The Circle, these Pied Pipers are forever preaching about the glorious freedoms that lay around the corner after just one or two more tweaks are made in the code.
